Mariano Numeriano Monzรณn Castaรฑeda, born on 20 December 1892 in Imus, Cavite, emerged from a family deeply rooted in Caviteรฑo heritage. Although genealogical sources identify his parents as Juan Saraza Castaรฑeda and Andrea Tirona Monzon, what is beyond dispute is the environment of discipline, patriotism, and civic-mindedness that shaped his youth.
Castaรฑeda entered public service through the Philippine Constabulary, the forerunner of todayโs national police structure. His early career reflected a blend of tactical skill and administrative discipline, eventually leading him to the Philippine Army, where he would play defining roles in both war and nation-building.

During World War II, Castaรฑeda fought in the defense of Bataan under the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE). He witnessed the fall of Bataan and survived the brutalities of the Japanese occupationโa formative period that tested and strengthened his resolve.
After his release from captivity, he became instrumental in sustaining resistance efforts in Cavite. His strategic knowledge, ability to coordinate local forces, and unwavering commitment to liberation became cornerstones of the guerrilla network in Southern Luzon.

With the return of sovereignty and the reconstruction of national institutions, Castaรฑeda assumed key leadership roles. His military competence and administrative integrity led to his appointment as:
โฆ Provost Marshal General, Philippine Army (1 June 1946)
โฆ Chief of Staff, Armed Forces of the Philippines (21 December 1948 โ 28 May 1951)
As AFP Chief of Staff, he oversaw postwar reorganization, the modernization of military systems, and the stabilization of internal security during the crucial early years of the Third Philippine Republic.
His leadership extended beyond the battlefieldโhe helped shape the moral, structural, and operational foundations of the postwar Armed Forces.

On 10 March 1947, a political rally at Plaza Miranda for President Manuel Roxas took a deadly turn when a live grenade was hurled toward the stage packed with the nationโs top leaders.
In that split second of impending chaos, Castaรฑeda acted with instinctive bravery:
โฆ He shouted for everyone to get down.
โฆ Ran directly toward the grenade.
โฆ Kicked it off the platform, redirecting the explosion away from the President and other officials.
The grenade detonated seconds laterโfar enough to prevent mass casualties.
This selfless act earned him the Philippine Medal of Valor, the highest military award for gallantry. His actions became a defining symbol of courage in public service.

To honor his contributions as a soldier, strategist, patriot, and hero, the government named the camp in Silang, Caviteโtoday the home of the Philippine National Police Academyโas:
Camp General Mariano N. Castaรฑeda
This naming was not simply ceremonial. It was a reminder that every cadet marching on its grounds is walking in the footsteps of a man who embodied:
โฆ Service before self
โฆ Courage under fire
โฆ Loyalty to the nation
โฆ Integrity in leadership
Camp Castaรฑeda stands today as a living legacyโan institution shaping future Police Lieutenants in the spirit of the very hero whose name it bears.
